Position of Operations Manager

The Operations Manager will be responsible for overseeing and co-ordinating all our resources, activities and programmes so that we use what God has given us as effectively as possible as the staff team, volunteers, and congregation work together to implement our vision.

Our parish
St George’s is a growing congregation in an iconic building in central London which is developing rapidly. In the last three years we have built up a range of programmes to serve the community (free concerts, a community café, food bank, a homeless shelter). Having been successful in a Heritage Lottery Fund application we are at the beginning of a major restoration programme and have exciting plans to expand our educational and community offer.
The successful candidate will have a major leadership role alongside the Parish Priest in a strong and diverse team. Our church offers wonderful opportunities to serve God and the community. We are blessed with good resources especially of buildings and a willing congregation.

Employer
The Operations Manager will be employed by the Parochial Church Council (PCC). The line manager is the Priest-in-charge (P-in-C) Jonathan Sedgwick.

Salary
£30,000 per annum. A full-time post of 35 hours a week excluding lunch breaks with 28 days annual leave plus bank holidays. The working pattern can be very flexible with scope to fit work around family and other commitments and include home working and we would consider some reduction of hours (pro rata) down to 0.8% of a full time job.

Job Description
1. Leadership
The Operations Manager will be part of the staff team and Parochial Church Council (PCC) and play a key role in evolving our vision and the plans to turn it into reality. Particular responsibilities will include:
• Working with the P-in-C so that PCC and team meetings focus on the right issues at the right time and actions are followed up

• Oversee the implementation of our Mission Action Plan turning it into an Annual Plan so we deploy our resources effectively.

• Line management of a number of staff including an administrator, community café manager, verger and facilities manager.

2. Events Management and hire of the crypt
The Operations Manager will take the lead in promoting the hire of our crypt and other parish halls to maximise our income and the facilities we can offer local community groups. (S)he will reach out to local businesses and charities and market and develop what we offer.
The Operations Manager will:
• Oversee the work of the administrator who has day to day responsibility for managing crypt and hall bookings

• Oversee the work of a caretaking team (involving a verge and volunteers) to ensure that there is always an appropriate welcome and logistical support for users

• Ensure that leases and contracts are well drawn up and managed

• Develop a longer term vision for the lets we want to prioritise and how we balance the needs to generate income and support community and charitable activity.

3. Communications
Oversee our communications strategy and build up relationships with local people and organisations so ensuring that messages are communicated to the congregation, the community and potential visitors and users of our buildings in an accessible and timely way and that we are well-informed about what others in the area are doing and opportunities for collaboration. The Operations Manager will also manage our church website.

4. Human resources and volunteering management
In addition to line management responsibilities, the operations manager will have overall responsibility for human resource management and especially for the recruitment and management of volunteers. (S)he will also:
• Oversee compliance of all church employees with HR policies, procedures and legislation including sick leave and annual leave.

• Act as health and safety officer ensuring compliance with legislation and our duty of care to all users of our buildings.

• Oversee our volunteering strategy and create a highly motivated team of volunteers to resource church and community activities.

• Recruit new volunteers and ensure that they have the training and support they need.

5. Other administrative functions
Much of the day to day administration of bookings, managing databases and oversight of the church diary is carried out by the administrator. The operations manager has a strategic role in ensuring that all our systems and processes work well together and that we comply with diocesan and legal information requirements. The operations manager will also:
• work with the Treasurer to ensure effective budgeting, financial management and prompt payment to suppliers.

• line manage the parish buildings manager (who is responsible for repairs and maintenance of the buildings and new building projects) and

• take the lead in submitting faculties (applications for planning permission) to the diocese.

6. Fundraising
Work with the P-in-C to identify and make applications for funding to support our activities and maintain our buildings and build relationships with potential donors and funding bodies.

Person specification
We are looking for someone experienced in operations management or a related field who is a collaborative team player, innovative and open to change, and who enjoys providing a warm welcome and high level of service to all clients, visitors and church members alike.
It would be an advantage if the individual was a Christian and occasionally able to worship with us but we would welcome applications from anyone who shares our values and is excited by what we do.

Essential skills and attributes
Strong project management skills and the ability to work calmly to deadlines, set priorities as well as to multi-task and work flexibly with colleagues
Experience of marketing or promoting an organisation or project
Experience of organising conferences or events (desirable)
Experience of managing and editing websites and social media (desirable)
Experience of managing staff and/or volunteers
High level of computer literacy
Excellent communication skills both written and oral
Ability to work in a busy office environment
